Over the past week, well, actually longer, I had a plan for today's blog post. But just as in the great art form of Jazz, I was influenced by my surroundings and decided to engage in the conversation. More specifically, I wanted to bring forward a great idea that I had read.
The 2/3 Rule
I recently discovered a book by Brandon Shaw called Startup Musician, Make Money Making Music (link here: https://amzn.to/2Rnj7Ub). The book is very practical and addresses the idea of being a freelance musician with personal testimonies by himself and other musicians.
As I was reading the book I came across the 2/3 rule, which are 3 factors to consider before taking a gig.
1.) How much the gig pays. 2.) The musicians you'll be playing with. 3.) The type of music you'll be playing.
Brandon states that, "Every gig you take must fulfill at least two of the three factors."
When I think back over the last decade, I would say that I had followed this premise without being aware. The exception may have been in the earliest stages. Of course we all want all three factors to align, but that's not always the case. Even though we may not always enjoy the particular music, person, or the pay, two out of three isn't bad.
