14 Years Later

My first year of college was over and I had started my second year feeling enthused. I had no idea that the person I was soon to meet would shape my life so drastically. Up to that point I had only a general idea of how the next few years would play out, no real plan.

I remember the night we met. I had just returned from picking up a couple new releases from Dokken and Megadeth. I was sitting outside my dorm and had noticed a couple girls coming my way. One of them knew a guy that also lived in my dorm. I don't remember the details, but somehow I started a conversation with one of the girls that led to my asking,

"Do you like Megadeth?"

A prompt answer followed, "Who is Megadeth?"

Over the following weeks I developed a strong relationship with this amazing woman, so much so that I asked her to marry me 5 months later. Did we marry quick? No. We knew that our engagement would be a bit longer that usual (years longer).

My wife has had such a major impact on my life and I can't begin to cover all the ways in which she has helped me grow as a person. Her support of my career choice, even when she had no idea what it meant to be a musician, has been consistent. Not only was I questioned about my choice, but she also took on the doubts and defended my choice. And as I've mentioned before, she has called out all of my excuses and has given me a "Real World" perspective.

What do I mean by "Real World"?

I'm referring to the world outside of my mind. As many of us know, we create our own world in which we easily convince ourselves of our own perspectives.

If my wife had not come into my life at the point then I'm not sure if I would have continued pushing to be a musician. I may have finished the degree and let it go afterwards. The reason is because I doubted my abilities. I gave a reason for why I couldn't do anything and everything. She refuted my bullshit.

There is so much more to say about the journey we have experienced together, but I'll save that for a different day. The take away? If it wasn't for this amazing woman's support, then I would probably not be in the position that I'm in now which is communicating to others through music.
