Pursuing The College Experience

Recently a couple buddies and myself went to visit a friend that we haven't see in almost 20 years. We reminisced about memories shared and those experiences we had apart. It was surreal. As our conversations continued through the night, our friend informed us that he had only completed his freshman year of high school before taking his GED. The great news is that he has an in demand job that provides financial security (to the degree we can use that phrase in today's world).

"Wait! You are telling me he has no college degree?!"

That is correct! And as we sat their further discussing education he was taken back by the fact that so many have become dependent of student loans. For the many of us that have pursued the "college experience", we know the lasting cloud of doom that is associated with this endeavor. The monthly payments, the always accruing interest, and the feeling of never being album to pay off the thousands of dollars that, wait for it, is not discharged in bankruptcy (except in very rare cases).

On top of this financial burden, let's discuss another component. Consider the many degrees that are offered without long term application and the feeling that you must obtain the highest degree from the most expensive school.

I have to confess, I am one of the many that have gone into debt under the pretense that you can, "DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND WORRY ABOUT IT LATER".

THAT IS HORRIBLE ADVICE!

You are finding that more and more people coming out of school are stating that they are putting their personal lives on hold because of the debt. So here's a thought, do worry about it now, even if you are 18 and think that you have plenty of time to figure it out. Once you graduate and receive the first bill statement then you may find yourself questioning your educational choices!

Now let me clarify, I'm not saying that college is horrible. The experiences I gained are irreplaceable, not to mention that I met my now wife while in college. Not only that, but because of my degree, I am currently an adjunct professor. What I am saying though, is that you should consider the long term effects and determine if the knowledge you are pursuing is available through other formats. This is a decision that has a huge effect on all aspects of your life!
