It's A Rarity

Over the last few years I can only recall a handful of times that my wife and son has been to able to see me perform. The reasons vary from performances being too late, too far from home, or too long. This is completely understandable.

What 0-3 year old finds sitting 2-4 hours enjoyable? Or for that matter, how many adults?

However, there are those few times that the conditions have been just right for my family to be part of the musical mayhem. (When I mention the "right conditions" I'm also referring to the temperament of the youngest member of the family). When they are able to come out I feel a sense of fulfillment and a sense of pride! This is my chance to show them and let them hear this art form that they've only heard being practiced. Although they may not fully understand the inner workings, it still brings what can feel like a separate life into full communion. Furthermore, those performance opportunities that take me hours from home sometimes cause feelings of guilt, so to have them with me give me ease of mind.

The big question in this career is WHY? You have to think big picture and why you are choosing to take on performance/teaching opportunities. Many of us are considering the financial aspect, that is if you are not working a side job. We may not want to always put it so bluntly, but it is one of the facets of this career that should not be overlooked. My goal is to provide for my family while working to build my career, so if I can do both, why not? And in doing so it is definitely rare to have them with me. The great part is that you have a chance to plan a mini vacation. Just make sure there's something kid friendly to do and that the hotel has a pool.
