Over the years I've been asked numerous times, "What do you do?"
In the beginning I would take pride in answering. With confidence I would say, "I'm a musician. I perform all around the area and teach privately as well as the college level."
"Oh, that's nice. Good luck with that."
Hearing this lackluster response over and over can wear on you, especially your confidence. What those who question don't know is that I've been pursuing this lifestyle for 8yrs. It is with this chosen career that my wife and I have purchased vehicles, a home, and started a family. Do I give all of these details in the moment? No. I don't feel the need to do so.
The sad thing is that there is still a stigma around the life of a musician. I've come to understand and to expect such responses/reactions from people and even family members. Though they may have at one time been concerned and unsure of how I would manage to "make it" , they now step up in my defense. But because of their association with me, they have also been questioned and endured looks of uncertainty.
Keep in mind that us musicians are entrepreneurs, which seems to be the fantasy of many today. We work to lineup jobs constantly, manage others, manage our expenses (ensure others are paid), self promote, work on creating new material, look for new opportunities (also create those opportunities), sell products, hire others to work with us, provide services with the goal of entertaining and/or educating those around us.
So the next time you encounter a musician, maybe consider the many facets of this career. Don't be quick to judge, but instead be quick to engage in conversation. We have some great stories we can share!
